1961: Origins in Space Exploration
The EXER-GENIE® Exerciser was developed as a way for astronauts to train for missions and exercise while in space. NASA was attracted by the lightweight and compact design, putting it to the test for astronaut fitness in microgravity. At Lockheed Human Performance Laboratory, NASA scientists found EXER-GENIE® extremely effective for conditioning muscle fiber and maintaining bone mass in space.
1964: A Breakthrough in Exercise Theory
EXER-GENIE® was recognized as a breakthrough in combining isometric and isotonic exercise. Its simplicity—using fingertip pressure to fatigue the muscle isometrically, then working the muscle isotonically—made it ideal for building strength, endurance, and flexibility in minimal time. This approach reduced repetition and boredom. In 2008, this became The Trainer Custom Series EXER-GENIE® Exerciser.
1965: Adoption by Professional Sports
The Green Bay Packers became the first NFL team to use EXER-GENIE® in their training. Soon, other teams—including the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys—followed suit.
1968: Mainstream Recognition and Space Missions
By August 1968, EXER-GENIE® was so popular with college and pro teams, as well as home users, that it was featured in Sports Illustrated. That same year, it was used to train astronauts for the Apollo 7 and Apollo 8 missions—including the historic orbit of the moon.
1969: Supporting the Apollo 11 Mission
EXER-GENIE® helped prepare the first men to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, and joined them on the Apollo 11 mission, providing a way to exercise during their journey.
1974 & 1975: More Sports Success
The NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers won back-to-back Stanley Cups while training with EXER-GENIE®, further cementing its reputation in professional sports.
1989: Expanding to Everyday Fitness
The Trainer® Fitness & Rehab System was developed for non-athletes, leveraging EXER-GENIE® technology and decades of research. It addressed the five main barriers to exercise: time, boredom, soreness, convenience, and consistency. Instructional materials made conditioning safe, simple, and effective—even with just two minutes a day.
That year, Team America Health & Fitness purchased EXER-GENIE®, appointing Jim Warren as National Director. With decades of experience, Jim led the upgrade to The Trainer Custom Series EXER-GENIE®, improving its smoothness and efficiency. The device remains in high demand among athletes, professionals, families, and travelers.
1997 & 2007: Official Recognition
EXER-GENIE® was included in the Official Navy Seal Physical Fitness Guide (1997 & 2007). It has been a secret weapon for champions in every sport, with Coach Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers pioneering its use. EXER-GENIE® is recognized as the original portable variable resistance trainer.
Present Day: Still Making History
Kikkan Randall, who incorporates EXER-GENIE® in her training, became the first American woman to win a medal in cross country skiing at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.
From its origins in the space program to its role in professional sports and everyday fitness, EXER-GENIE® continues to be a trusted tool for athletes and health enthusiasts worldwide.
